Reducing our Carbon Footprint

Our commitment to sustainability is reflected in the initiatives on this page. Since 2021, we’ve contributed to A1 Group’s ESG report, tracking energy use, waste, and travel impact. Sustainability is not just corporate responsibility—it’s a key part of our strategy. While we’re proud of our progress, we remain committed to continuous improvement.

Powered by Renewable Energy Across Europe

Our facilities in Germany and Switzerland are powered by 100% renewable energy, with all green energy certificates available in our compliance center. In Austria, both of our Vienna zones run on 100% certified renewable energy. Our Croatian data center operates with a 91% renewable energy share, while Bulgaria has increased its renewable mix to 75%. We are continuing to increase renewable energy usage across all Exoscale zones as part of our long-term sustainability strategy.

Multicriteria Life Cycle Assessment

Exoscale has implemented an environmental impact assessment based on the life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology as defined in the 14000 series of ISO standards. This approach provides a detailed evaluation of the environmental impact of our products and services throughout their entire life cycle, from raw materials to disposal. By adopting this methodology, we reinforce our commitment to sustainable practices and responsible resource management.

Impact Calculator for Our Clients

Exoscale has implemented an automated impact calculator based on CloudAssess, going beyond carbon accounting with a multicriteria impact analysis. Aligned with ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 standards and ADEME standards, it provides a detailed environmental balance sheet, supporting sustainable cloud usage and our customers’ CSRD reporting obligations.

Supporting The Shift Project

Exoscale supports The Shift Project, a French think tank dedicated to the low-carbon transition and guided by scientific rigor. Through its long-running “Numérique” programme, the Shift Project has produced reference work on the carbon and energy footprint of digital infrastructure, networks, and usage.

We are joining the partner base of the PLATON project (2026–2027), the Shift Project’s Plan de transformation organisationnel du numérique, which aims to map the blocking points and the levers available to operators of digital infrastructure, networks and services on the path to a sober, decarbonised and resilient digital ecosystem at French and European level. Engaging with this work helps Exoscale stay ahead of the systemic challenges of a sustainable European cloud.

Sustainability Measures

Several measures have already been implemented at Exoscale to ensure a more sustainable usage of servers and energy.

Renewable Energy

Around 90% of the electricity powering our infrastructure comes from renewable sources, weighted by the size and footprint of each zone. This significant share reflects our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint and sourcing energy from environmentally responsible providers.
Extended Server Fleet Life

The average age of our server fleet is 3 years and more. A program is in place to repurpose older servers for non customer-facing workloads to keep them in use as long as they are useful.
High Density Rack Design

By packing more servers and other equipment into high density racks, Exoscale reduces its overall data center footprint and the associated costs of building and maintaining a larger facility. Smaller datacenters require less energy to power and cool.
Energy-Efficient Design

Our servers are designed internally from carefully selected components, with wattage being a key metric in the selection. Our custom storage node chassis has been internally designed with energy efficiency in mind, with a focus on reducing energy requirements and operating costs.
Refurbished Equipment

We make frequent use of refurbished equipment and while our new servers are always using the newest generation of hardware to ensure the best performance per watt, many of our supporting equipment, such as most of our networking equipment, is refurbished.
Direct Shipping

We ship our servers directly from the distributor to our datacenters, avoiding the unnecessary transport of equipment and reducing our carbon footprint.

From a remote-first work arrangement to innovative waste heat utilization in our lab datacenter, Exoscale prioritizes carbon footprint reduction at each opportunity.

Remote-first approach

Exoscale is a largely distributed company, and we believe in a remote-first approach to work. This helps reducing the impact associated with maintaining a traditional office space, such as energy consumption, waste production, and commuting emissions.
Waste heat utilization

Always looking for new and innovative ways to minimize our environmental impact, we have started using the waste heat generated by our lab infrastructure to heat our Lausanne office space in the winter months.
Personal commitment

We encourage our employees to make a personal commitment to reducing their impact on the environment. Many of our employees have been increasingly relying on trains to travel to our meetings, which helps to reduce emissions associated with air travel. In addition, a high rate of our employees use public transportation, biking and electric vehicles to commute to work, further reducing their environmental impact.

Our Swiss and German zones are hosted at Equinix state-of-the art data centers. Equinix offers the highest level of security, reliability and energy efficiency in their data centers and is planning to reach carbon neutrality by 2030.
